The Design Element
Black is such a strong color. The thumbnails below look so heavy as a group.
This weight is almost as powerful as the color red,
but in a different way. It is more like these sites convey a weighty importance
in contrast to the bold punch of red. Black is a strong color with out the
attention grabbing aspects of red.
In print it is not usually the smartest thing to use reversed out text,
but on the web there is a lot more flexibility. Not having to deal with how
much a paper bleeds only leaves you to worry about how easy it is to read.
One really interesting thing about black is how it makes color pop. Photos
really stand out on black, and anything with some color to it can really
carry a lot of weight.
Connotations of black : Evil, self-confidence, power, strength,
death, sophisticated, designer, formal, conservative, serious, mysterious,
sexy, mourning, rebellion, elegant, night, illegal, wicked, intensity, mature,
advanced, fashionable, stylish, chic, and trendy.
