The Site Type

It is simply amazing how much work people will go to in order to give things away. All of these sites offer killer sets of tools at the low low price of absolutely nothing. The obvious assumption is that these people do it out of passion for the topic, the same exact reason Design Meltdown even exists. If I didn't enjoy it, and have a passion for doing it, it would have been dead so long ago.

It is really cool to see how seriously people take the tools they have created, they present them on beautiful sites in a way that elevates them to a higher level. Presentation really does have a huge impact on the overall perception of something. And the expected quality of what your getting is certainly enhanced.

So why does this matter? For the community we get to benefit from these other peoples hard work. For them, I imagine it is a way for them to give back to all the people they have learned from. Again this mentality is alive in Design Meltdown. Early on I realized that I was finally putting something of value back into the system which I had been gleaning off of for so long.

One key reason these sites need a nice pretty wrapper is to draw in developers to use it. It is quiet simple, everyone assumes we can judge a book by it's cover. If we landed on a site for some JS library that was hacked up with nasty ad's and a totally lack of respect we could only assume this was the purpose of the site, and thus the code must be junk.

No mention of the Yahoo UI libraries? I´ve not yet seen a more complete and professional set of javascript libraries. Sure, their web site is boring, but so is Sun Microsystems´ and they make Java.

I thought I´d mention www.iconbuffet.com. They give away free icons every month and you can trade icons with fellow iconbuffet-ers.
