The Design Element
The use of grass in design is relatively common. Not so much that I would call it a trend, but it is definitely a pattern that exists. There are two clear and rather obvious reasons to use the design element.
First is the most obvious one; the literal usage. Many sites have incorporated grass into their design because it simply fits the topic of the site. Sometimes being overly literal can get annoying, but in this case it just makes for a beautiful design element that happens to help communicate the purpose of the site rather effectively. There is certainly nothing wrong with rapidly communicating to visitors the purpose of the site, and this is just the case with sites such as LawnTec, Brams Turf, and Rail Riding.
Secondly, some of these sites draw on the connotations of grass to create an atmosphere that says what they want about their site. Grass closely ties into the design elements of nature and green. Both of which have very pleasant and happy connotations. So by pulling in the grassy elements these sites have created warm and welcoming environments. Take a look at
Simon Tweedale, Tap Root Creative, and Unstructure in particular to see what I mean.
