Grassy Design

1st edition — by Patrick McNeil — Sep. 10, 2007

The Design Element

The use of grass in design is relatively common. Not so much that I would call it a trend, but it is definitely a pattern that exists. There are two clear and rather obvious reasons to use the design element.

First is the most obvious one; the literal usage. Many sites have incorporated grass into their design because it simply fits the topic of the site. Sometimes being overly literal can get annoying, but in this case it just makes for a beautiful design element that happens to help communicate the purpose of the site rather effectively. There is certainly nothing wrong with rapidly communicating to visitors the purpose of the site, and this is just the case with sites such as LawnTec, Brams Turf, and Rail Riding.

Secondly, some of these sites draw on the connotations of grass to create an atmosphere that says what they want about their site. Grass closely ties into the design elements of nature and green. Both of which have very pleasant and happy connotations. So by pulling in the grassy elements these sites have created warm and welcoming environments. Take a look at Simon Tweedale, Tap Root Creative, and Unstructure in particular to see what I mean.

I´m not really on the same line... So when you say using grass in your design is a trend. I´m asking myself, when will the flower part, tree part and whatever part come?

Indeed, those are all design patterns people use. I just picked up on the "grassy" one because it seemed like it was more used with a bit of meaning behind it. Many of the sites using those other elements seemed less effective...but i am sure there are good samples of all those styles...just gotta dig enough.

Seriously? Grassy? I think might have run out of categories to add. ;)

Lisa, I just call them as I see them. After sifting through 10 zillion links you can´t help but see weird patterns :)

When you introduced the category ´grassy´ in design, I thought immediately of the following website:

http://www.monkeybusinesssports.com/

The grassy background with the kids running wildly outside makes complete sense. I agree, grass is a good design element given the subject of the website is related.

taprootcreative.com/ is one of my favorite sites.
