The Design Element

In the previous edition many of the samples were pure grey with hardly any color, and they were mostly light in tone. This set however has a bit more diverse grouping and isn't so focused on purely grey designs. Most of the samples use loads of grey with at least one strong color. It is a really strong combination.

One really cool thing about grey is how it can make other colors really pop out. Parhazard does this in a very powerful way. The colors just leap out of the page. It gives a real life to the site.

I view grey as the workhorse of colors on the web. For me it finds its way into nearly every design in one way or another. It works well with any colors, it is subtle and doesn't draw attention, all this makes it great for reducing elements in the hierarchy of importance on a page. Just look at the heading for this page, I wonder if people even notice the edition, my name, and the date? It is unimportant information in the long run though, so grey is perfect.

Connotations of grey : Stylish, chic, elegant, classy, fresh, innovative, modern, futuristic, technology, spacious, fashionable, soft, airy, high-tech, sleek, neutral, conservative, smart, designer, trendy, light, open, state-of-the-art, impartial, calm, comfortable, peaceful, and relaxed.

More than once I've tried selling clients on the medium-tone chocolatey grey in combination with hotter colors as seen in those examples -- not one of them would sign off on it. "Too dark, too drab", etc. Guess I need hipper clients :P (Just kidding, if one of them is reading this).

Another great palette tool is the one at Defence Mechanism.
