The Design Element

Green is one of the more versatile colors available to the web designer. I would argue that blue is the most flexible, and green the second. This explains why the blue and green color combo is such a common choice. Green is simply a pleasant color. It isn't over bearing, instead it is calming, friendly, and connected with nature. These positive connotations make it a safe and effective color to use.

Factoria Norte is an interesting example to look at. The green used in this case has a bit of a hip feel to it. It isn't the saturated pure green you find in nature, it has a bit more yellow to it resulting in a non standard green that feels unique. It isn't entirely disconnected from its natural roots though. The nice leaf style flourish in the logo echo's the natural connotations, and the subtle tan background helps connect with natural elements. Interestingly the dark gray header contrasts beautifully with the green and creates an overall "designer" feel. What's neat about this is that they connected with the positive elements of the color green, but placed it in more stylish environment. This makes for a well polished design that doesn't feel stale or sterile. Very nicely done indeed.

Another intriguing example of the color green is Dan Viveiros portfolio. The green used in this case is far more saturated. Instead of the subtle, calming effect of the prior sample, this one evokes much more of a animated style. The energy created by this saturated green reflects the energy of the artist. Whether he meant to or not his style says this about him. This type of green also connects well with the do it yourself semi punk mentality that is evident in his choice of imagery and design style.

Connotations of green: Nature, environment, money, wealth, family, harmony, health, peace, posterity, soothing, relaxing, springtime, youth, humor, fun, happiness, life, growth, jealousy, envy, novice, restful, calming, balance, stability, summer, organic, recycled, plants, trees, fertility, fresh, good luck, and vigor.
