The Design Element

They usage of flash elements as a portion of a page is rather common. I believe the diversity of this set of samples is even greater then the first.

Lets start with perhaps the simplest example. Domestic is a fine example of this. There is only one real flash element on the home page. The animated logo might seem like such a little detail, almost not even worthy of mention. But stop to consider the life it brings to the page. This other wise static image gives movement and a level of interest that would other wise not be there. In the end it is all about the details, this one could have easily been ignored. Instead, the site is taken to a new level by working in something unusual. Kudos to them for not quitting early.

Another fantastic example of a site that didn't fall short of it's potential is the DoGo web site. This is the portfolio for a web designer, and the extra details on this one make it stand out. The flash banner in particular.

Another interesting usage of flash elements in a page can be seen on the NC State University web site where the topic is poultry science. Now, there are many boring topics in the world, and I would certainly say that this qualifies as one. Yet, one look at the site and I can't help but want to dig in a bit, even though I have absolutely no reason in the world to read anything about poultry science! I would say the site as a whole is a great success, and the flash on the home page not only illustrates the topic, but gives it a distinct personality.

Finally I would like to point out the Iris Interactive site. I believe commercials running on the home page selling the site or its products is a great way to draw the user in or to at least get them up to speed as to the purpose of the site. The intro on the Iris Interactive site is in fact a commercial, but the product is the company. So instead of talking about what they do, they simply show a compelling and well done flash animation. I don't have to read a word and I understand there level of competency. I believe this could simply be referred to as a wow factor. Consider your site and what you could do to wow your clients.

I think these sorts of sites are the way to go. They combine the best of both worlds.

Anyhoo, I was just wondering if there was planning for an article on adverts.. A lot of sites have them, and a lot of people don't like them. A good showcase of sites that display adverts seamlessley as if they were part of it would be great.

Just a thought.
