The Design Element

Well the flow of one page sites has not shown any sign of slowing down. I didn't even include all the links I have because the list would have been a bit long. Clearly this is a popular style, particularly with portfolio sites. I really believe this is a good thing. It keeps people from having to work to hard to see what you have accomplished.

I think a collections of works presented in this way is very impressive. Part of the theory to me is that it overwhelms the visitor with so much cool stuff they leave with a very good impression of you. As opposed to the alternative, they click through to the first sample, and even if it is really good, you only have the impact of that one piece. If I were skimming through portfolios looking to hire someone I would certainly appreciate the ease and speed the one pager offers! You will notice my portfolio is now a single pager; I even made it into my own article! (Please forgive my shameless self promotion)

Thank you very much for linking my portfolio! I am a young webdesigner and it is pleasant to see my work in others sites! :)

Anyone know where I can find a tutorial on creating a one-page site that makes the background go dark, as an image appears in the layer above (ex: http://www.whitwa.net)

I believe all that has been done is a background color has been set for the container or image tag. So while it loads it has a solid color.
