The Design Element

This element is such a trivial part of a design it almost feels silly to do a whole article on it. But, this is something you see all over the place so it can't be ignored. I also don't want to trivialize any of the designs below, all of which are outstanding. Categorizing these sites based on one small element of their design might seem a bit brutal, but I think they serve to show that the element can be used to enhance a site and it can certainly be bound to the site in a thoughtful way.

Since stripes are used as such a subtle aspect of a design looking through samples is probably the best way to get inspired in how they might work in your design. So instead of analyzing the element, here are several tutorials on how to create your own stripes. These are in fact the first real tutorials presented on Design Melt Down, I hope you enjoy this new direction:

Not silly or trivial at all. Great tutorial. And if you want to do a few (make that lots) more, that would be great!
Thanks a million.

The screenshot in your gallery for modernstreet dot com goes to a page which has nothing at all to do with stripes, or even with any kind of interesting design at all.

Oh well...

Yup, looks like the owners of the domain changed. It is a dead link, but the screenshot is still available.

Wow man, you have no idea how long I've been googling for how to make these damn stripes. Now I've finally found out how. Thanks a lot!
