The Design Element

For me travel and tourism sites are another source of annoyance. I can't even begin to count how many times I have gone in search of information about some location I have never been to only to be lost in a mess of out of date and confusing information. Well, lucky for us, this is not always the case. As you will find with the attached set of links, many places have made it their priority to not only get you the information you need, but to also present it in a beautiful way!

The location specific samples pretty much universally reflect the pace your going. Lots of blues on water related locations, greens on parks etc. Travel and tourism sites are pretty much the time to stick to the obvious. It communicates with the user what their looking at, and what the location might be like. Basically, try to establish the same atmosphere the location has on the site!

This is a nice collection of sites. Another one worth checking out is 100% Pure New Zealand, which won a Webby for the Tourism category. I think one of the defining elements for these sites has to be the imagery -- good photos of a location can speak volumes.

A agree with Mike. Lots of actual photos are one of the biggest benefits.
For example portal www.znatemapu.cz - accomplished with up-to-date photos of every turist place - abou thousand places, every with several photos. The site is only in Czech language.
