The Design Element

Yellow is somewhat of a less popular color. It doesn't show up very much in web design, at least not in very prominent ways. You can also see by the samples that the usage varies. Lets look at a few samples to see what kind of meaning was gleaned from the color.

The no-spec.com is the first to stand out. They clearly use yellow to reinforce the purpose of the site, to warn people about the down side to accepting spec work. The entire site is a great big caution sign, it is only appropriate that they use the color yellow. Caution is one of the most commonconnotations of the color yellow.

Designtaxi.com uses it for a vastly different reason which couldn't be more obvious I suppose. Beyond that, the rest of the samples only seem to use yellow for the more abstract connotations, like fun, energetic and happiness. One thing is certain about these sites, they catch your eye. Yellow is not nearly as powerful as red, but at the same time it carries some impact. Perhaps it is the less used nature of the color, or just that it is a bold one.

Connotations of yellow: Nature, earthy, warmth, fun, sun, summer, illumination, inspiration, energy, hazard, warning, emergency, sunshine, happiness, joy, cowardice, deceit, cheerful, excitement, healthy, hope, support, laid back, spring, and relaxed.

I remeber Scott Jarkoff, Founder of deviantArt.com, used to own a website called YellowAlien.com which was almost totally yellow.

The site only link to deviantart.com now, but it can be seeen on the wayback machine: http://web.archive.org/web/20050210110526/www.yellowalien.net/

Another site that has also sprung to mind is the Symantec http://www.symantec.com website (which I have suggested). It not totally Yellow but they do use it to incorperate their brand image.... Yellow!

i've also found that yellow can look quite different on multiple displays. it seems to look different on every screen. just slight differences in monitor color balance can change the whole tone of a shade of yellow.

yes, the i-amonline site is wonderful. I find it interesting that my instinct would be to never ever use that yellow...and yet there it is looking awesome.

This site of my student-companie is also yellow: http://kerberus.khlim.be/
I think tīs very difficult to design in yellow, because its difficult to combine it with other colors.

BTW: There seems to be something wrong with this form in opera, because i couldnīt enter my name, tought maybe its due to me because in explorer itīs acting also a little strange, after i filles in my email i couldnīt use the cursor to go to the text-area, to edit my text.
